Elba: Portoferraio   42ºN48'  010ºE08'

March 2010

Nelson described Portoferraio as the most complete harbor in the world, for its size. For us this port is one of the most charming and typical we have visited so far. Its protected bay, its fortresses and old town create a very special atmosphere.  In the port there are a few pontoons but they are reserved for small boats. Alongside the quay, there are 150 berths, of which 10% are for transit boats. Quite a number passed here the winter as the rates are quite attractive: 125€ per month for  a 12/15 m. unit, plus water and electricity, or 24€ per day. In the middle season it is 300€ per month, or 50€ per day. In the summer 100€. No showers, except public ones in the city. The staff is very friendly and cooperative.

In the town you will find all types of shops, even Slam and NorthSail.

You can visit the house where Napoleon during his first exile.

Elbe: Porto Azzurro   42ºN45'  010ºE23'

March 2010

15 NM from Portoferraio lays the village of Porto Azzurro. In front of the marina you have a large square with numerous coffee shops and restaurants. And obviously tourists shops. This little port is a real post card. But it does not seems real, authentic, it is too clean! The marina has 190 berths, 25 of which for passing boats. The pontoons are new and have water and electricity. No answer on channel 9, it is best to call ( 3357858832) et non à la VHF (canal 9 en principe).

The staff is friendly and charged us the category below. 28€ per night instead of 37€.

In the summer it goes from 28€ up to 70€. The marina has no showers but there are public ones close (2.5€).

For the curiosity there is a motor boat belonging the prison authority. In fact Porto Azurro in the past, under the name of Longone, a prison center for the maffiosi.
